Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 1/2 cup (85g) semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Line the basket with parchment paper if desired, poking a few holes for airflow.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine water, cubed butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove from heat and add flour all at once. Stir quickly until a thick dough forms and pulls away from the sides.
  4. Let the dough cool for 3-4 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Beat vigorously until the dough is smooth and glossy.
  5. Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip (or use a zip-top bag with a 1/2-inch opening snipped off).
  6. Pipe 1-inch pieces onto the air fryer basket or parchment. Use kitchen scissors to snip off each bite, spacing them out.
  7. Air fry in batches for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp, shaking the basket halfway through.
  8. While churro bites are still warm, brush lightly with melted butter and toss immediately in a bowl with 1/2 cup sugar and 1.5 teaspoons cinnamon.
  9. For the chocolate sauce: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and heavy cream. Microwave in 20-second bursts, stirring after each, until melted and smooth. Alternatively, melt together in a small saucepan over low heat.
  10. Serve churro bites warm with chocolate sauce for dipping.

Notes

Let the dough cool before adding the egg to avoid scrambling. Use a star tip for classic churro ridges and extra crispiness. Work in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze and reheat in the air fryer. Chocolate sauce can be refrigerated for up to 5 days and reheated gently.
