A cozy and easy slow cooker apple butter recipe that transforms fresh apples into a rich, spiced homemade spread perfect for toast, yogurt, or gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds (1.8 kg) apples (mix of Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) apple cider or water
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash, core, and roughly chop about 4 pounds (1.8 kg) of apples. No need to peel.
  2. Place chopped apples in slow cooker. Add apple cider or water, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg (optional), lemon juice, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours. Stir around 6 hours to check and prevent sticking.
  4. Once apples are soft and mixture is thick, blend with immersion blender or regular blender to desired consistency, leaving some texture if preferred.
  5. If apple butter is watery after blending, cook uncovered on HIGH for 30-60 minutes to thicken, stirring occasionally.

Notes

Do not peel apples to retain natural pectin for thickening. Stir midway through cooking to prevent sticking. Blend carefully to avoid hot splashes. For thicker apple butter, finish with uncovered simmer on high. You can customize spices or sweeteners to taste.
