A timeless and smooth whiskey cocktail combining bourbon or rye whiskey with bitters, sugar, and a twist of orange peel for a perfectly balanced drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz Bourbon or Rye Whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube or 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 23 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 twist of orange peel
  • Ice (preferably a large ice cube or sphere)

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar cube in your Old Fashioned glass and add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar.
  2. Add a splash of water (about 1 teaspoon) to help dissolve the sugar.
  3. Gently muddle the sugar, bitters, and water until the sugar is completely dissolved and a syrupy base is formed.
  4. Fill the glass with a large ice cube or several smaller ones.
  5. Pour 2 oz of bourbon or rye whiskey over the ice.
  6. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20-30 seconds to chill and mix the flavors.
  7. Express the orange peel over the glass by squeezing it to release the oils, then rim the glass with the peel and drop it in as garnish.

Notes

Avoid muddling the orange peel with the sugar to prevent bitterness. Use a large ice cube or sphere to slow dilution. Stir rather than shake to maintain clarity and smoothness. Adjust bitters to taste. For a lower sugar version, substitute sugar with maple syrup or a sugar substitute.
