A quick and easy recipe for crispy French toast sticks made in the air fryer, served with a sweet cinnamon sugar dip and maple syrup. Perfect for breakfast or a snack with a crunchy outside and soft, custardy inside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick white sandwich bread or brioche
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk or milk of choice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or cooking spray for greasing
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for dip)
  • Maple syrup for dipping

Instructions

  1. Cut 6 slices of bread into sticks about 3/4 inch (2 cm) thick and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 3 eggs, 1/2 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for about 3 minutes.
  4. Dip each bread stick into the batter, coating all sides, and let excess drip off.
  5. Lightly grease the air fryer basket with melted butter or cooking spray and arrange the coated sticks in a single layer with space between them.
  6. Air fry at 370°F (188°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through (4-5 minutes) until golden and crispy outside but soft inside.
  7. While cooking, mix 1/4 cup sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl for the cinnamon sugar dip and pour maple syrup into another bowl.
  8. Remove sticks from air fryer, let cool slightly, and serve warm with cinnamon sugar dip and maple syrup on the side.

Notes

Use slightly stale bread for best texture. Do not over-soak the bread sticks in batter to avoid sogginess. Preheat the air fryer for crispiness. Flip sticks halfway through cooking for even browning. Cook in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding. Butter adds better flavor and browning than cooking spray. Serve immediately for best crispiness. Leftovers can be reheated in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes. The cinnamon sugar dip can settle if stored; best to make fresh.
