A quick and easy appetizer featuring crunchy water chestnuts wrapped in smoky, crispy bacon, perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (8 ounces / 225 grams) water chestnuts, drained and patted dry
  • 8 thick-cut bacon slices, cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • About 16 toothpicks, soaked in water for 10 minutes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and set a wire rack on top if using.
  2. Drain and dry the water chestnuts thoroughly with paper towels.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir until the sugar mostly dissolves.
  4. Toss the water chestnuts in the soy sauce mixture until evenly coated. Let marinate for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Wrap each water chestnut with a half slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
  6. Place the wrapped water chestnuts on the wire rack or foil-lined baking sheet, spaced about 1 inch apart.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping each piece carefully after 12 minutes to crisp bacon evenly.
  8. Check for doneness; bacon should be golden and crispy, water chestnuts tender but crunchy. Add a few minutes if needed.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes on the rack.
  10. Serve warm with extra toothpicks for easy snacking.

Notes

Soak toothpicks in water before use to prevent burning. Use thick-cut bacon for best texture. Flip halfway through baking for even crispiness. Can substitute turkey bacon or smoked tempeh for variations. Store leftovers in airtight container refrigerated up to 3 days and reheat in oven at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.
