A quick and easy homemade snack featuring a crispy garlic butter crust and gooey melted cheese, perfect for parties or cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round loaf of sourdough or Italian bread (about 1214 oz / 340400 g)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (about 4 oz / 115 g)
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 2 oz / 55 g)
  • Optional: ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly incorporated.
  3. Using a serrated knife, cut the bread into a grid pattern: slice vertically about 1 inch apart, cutting almost to the bottom but not all the way through, then slice horizontally at the same intervals to create a checkerboard.
  4. Spread the garlic butter generously between the cuts, making sure to get it deep into the crevices.
  5. Stuff the shredded mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan (if using) into the gaps between the bread slices.
  6. Wrap the entire loaf tightly in aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet or skillet.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes to melt the cheese and warm the bread.
  8. Carefully unwrap the foil and bake uncovered for another 10 minutes to crisp the crust.
  9. Let the bread rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the cheese to settle.

Notes

Use a fresh loaf with a sturdy crust for best results. Mix garlic thoroughly into softened butter to avoid burning. Wrap the bread in foil during the first bake to trap moisture, then uncover to crisp the crust. Let the bread rest before serving to prevent cheese from dripping.
