These crispy star-shaped puff pastry cheese twists are a quick, easy, and irresistible homemade snack featuring flaky puff pastry and melted cheese with a festive twist.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp mixed Italian dried herbs (optional)
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold one puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. If desired, roll it out slightly to about 1/8 inch (3mm) thickness for thinner, crispier twists.
  3. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese evenly over the pastry, then season with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and optional dried herbs.
  4. Place the second puff pastry sheet on top, pressing gently to seal the layers together. Use a rolling pin lightly to press and ensure the cheese is sandwiched well.
  5. Using a cookie cutter or sharp knife, cut out star shapes from the layered pastry. Then cut each star in half or into strips depending on the size of your cutter to form twists.
  6. Take each strip and twist it a couple of times to create a spiral look, then place them on the baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) space between each twist.
  7. Brush each twist lightly with the beaten egg for a golden shine and sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top if using.
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the twists are puffed up and golden brown. Start checking at 15 minutes to avoid burning.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to crisp up further.

Notes

Keep puff pastry cold before working with it to ensure good puffing. Avoid overloading cheese to prevent soggy pastry. Twist strips about two full turns for best texture. Let twists cool on baking sheet before transferring to wire rack to maintain crispness. For softer twists, leave in turned-off oven with door slightly ajar for a few minutes. Store leftovers in airtight container with paper towel to absorb moisture. Reheat in oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness.
