A comforting and easy breakfast casserole featuring buttery croissants, savory ham, and a blend of cheddar and Swiss cheeses, perfect for busy mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large buttery croissants, torn into bite-sized pieces (day-old croissants work great)
  • 2 cups diced cooked ham (good quality deli ham recommended)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups whole milk (can substitute with 2% or almond milk)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (to grease the baking dish)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease your 9×13-inch baking dish with the melted butter, coating all sides to prevent sticking.
  3. Tear the croissants into bite-sized pieces and place them in the baking dish. Scatter the diced ham evenly over the croissants.
  4. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and Swiss cheese evenly over the ham and croissants.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper until fully combined and slightly frothy.
  6. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissant, ham, and cheese layers. Press down gently with a spatula to help the croissants absorb the liquid. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to soak thoroughly.
  7. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from oven and let rest for 5-10 minutes to firm up before slicing.
  9. Optional: Sprinkle with freshly chopped chives or parsley before serving.

Notes

Use day-old croissants for better custard absorption. Tent with foil if top browns too quickly. Let casserole soak for 10 minutes before baking for creamy texture. Room temperature eggs and milk help with even baking. Can substitute ham with bacon, sausage, or vegetables for variations. Refrigerate leftovers up to 3 days; reheat gently in oven. Freeze portions up to 1 month.
