A quick and comforting breakfast casserole featuring buttery croissants soaked in a cheesy custard with savory ham. Perfect for busy mornings or relaxed weekends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large buttery croissants, day-old or slightly stale
  • 2 cups diced cooked ham (leftover or deli ham, thick-cut)
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 6 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups whole milk or 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for greasing)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives or parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Tear the croissants into bite-sized pieces and place them evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle diced ham evenly over the croissants, then add shredded cheddar and Swiss cheeses evenly on top.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, Dijon mustard, salt, and freshly cracked pepper until smooth and slightly frothy.
  5. Slowly pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissant, ham, and cheese layers. Gently press down with a spatula to help the croissants soak up the liquid without mashing them.
  6. Let the dish rest at room temperature for about 10 minutes to allow the croissants to absorb the custard.
  7. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and puffed, and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let the bake cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Letting the croissants soak in the custard for 10 minutes before baking is key to avoid sogginess. Use room-temperature eggs and milk for even custard texture. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil halfway through baking. Dijon mustard adds a subtle tang that balances richness.
