  • 1 to 1.5 cups vodka (240360 ml, adjust to preference)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (strained, about 60 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish (fresh preferred)
  • Hot sauce to taste (Tabasco recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Celery stalks (for stirring and garnish)
  • Cherry tomatoes (bite-sized)
  • Fresh lemon and lime wedges
  • Cucumber slices
  • Green olives (pitted, sometimes stuffed)
  • Pickled green beans
  • Pickled asparagus spears
  • Pickled okra
  • Pickled mushrooms
  • Cooked bacon strips
  • Cheese cubes (sharp cheddar or pepper jack)
  • Cooked shrimp
  • Hard-boiled eggs (halved)
  • Fresh herbs (dill, parsley, or basil)
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • Celery bitters or other cocktail bitters (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Base Mix (10 minutes): In a large bowl or pitcher, combine 4 cups (960 ml) of tomato juice with 1 to 1.5 cups (240-360 ml) vodka. Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish, 1 teaspoon celery salt, 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika if using. Stir gently but thoroughly to blend all flavors.
  2. Taste and Adjust (5 minutes): Give the mixture a quick taste. Add hot sauce drop by drop until you reach your preferred spice level.
  3. Chill the Base (at least 30 minutes): Cover and refrigerate the base mix for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld and keep the drink refreshing.
  4. Prepare Garnishes (15-20 minutes): Wash and cut fresh garnishes: slice cucumbers, wedge lemons and limes, halve cherry tomatoes, and trim celery stalks. Arrange pickled vegetables and savory bites like bacon, cheese, and shrimp into small bowls. Place tongs and toothpicks nearby.
  5. Set Up Your Bar (10 minutes): Place the chilled base mix in a large beverage dispenser or pitcher surrounded by bowls of garnishes. Arrange glassware and stirrers within reach. Fill an ice bucket or bowl with plenty of ice cubes.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Guests build their Bloody Marys by pouring the base mix over ice and choosing garnishes. Encourage mixing and matching.

Notes

If the base mix is too thick, add a splash of cold water or more tomato juice. If too thin, add extra horseradish or Worcestershire sauce. Use large ice cubes to prevent dilution. Pre-chill glasses for best experience. Prepare base mix up to 24 hours ahead and stir before serving. Garnishes like fresh celery and lemon wedges are best used same day; pickled veggies and cooked bacon can be refrigerated up to 3 days.
