  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) warm water
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk
  • 1/4 cup (60g) melted unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
  • 1 egg
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, garlic salt

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine active dry yeast, sugar, and warm water. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir until the dough comes together.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Buns: Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and flatten slightly. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the buns with a towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
  7. Brush and Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the buns with egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water) and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Cool: Let the buns cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving.
