A festive and flavorful Halloween dip featuring a smoky black bean base layered with fresh salsa, melted cheddar cheese, and a sour cream spider web topping. Quick, easy, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz / 425 g) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 12 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup (240 ml) sour cream (or Greek yogurt for tangier option)
  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh salsa
  • 1015 black olives, sliced (optional, for decoration)
  • 2 tbsp chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Black Bean Base (10 minutes): In a food processor, combine the drained black beans, minced chipotle peppers, garlic, ground cumin, lime juice, salt, and olive oil. Pulse until mostly smooth but still a bit chunky. Taste and adjust seasoning. Add water by teaspoon if too thick.
  2. Spread the Bean Layer: Transfer the black bean mixture into your serving dish and spread evenly about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Add the Salsa Layer: Spoon fresh salsa evenly over the black bean layer without mixing.
  4. Top with Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the salsa layer.
  5. Chill for 10 minutes to let flavors meld and cheese settle.
  6. Create the Spider Web Design: Fill a squeeze bottle or zip-top bag with sour cream. Pipe concentric circles on top of the cheese layer, then drag lines from center to edges with a toothpick to form a web.
  7. Add the ‘Spiders’: Place sliced black olives on the web to resemble spiders and scatter chopped green onions around.
  8. Serve and enjoy with tortilla chips, sliced veggies, or warm pita wedges. Best fresh but can be refrigerated up to 2 days.

Notes

Chill the dip before piping the sour cream web to keep lines crisp. Use a squeeze bottle for better control of the web design. If sour cream is too thick to pipe, stir in a teaspoon of milk. Avoid over-processing beans to keep some texture. Spread salsa thinly to prevent messy dipping. Prepare layers ahead but add sour cream web just before serving.
