Perfect Classic Margarita on the Rocks

classic margarita on the rocks recipe - featured image

A simple, refreshing margarita recipe with just three main ingredients: blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur, served on the rocks with a salted rim.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) blanco tequila (100% agave)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz (30 ml) orange liqueur (Triple sec or Cointreau)
  • Coarse salt for rimming the glass
  • Ice cubes (large or crushed)
  • Lime wedge for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass, then dip the rim into coarse salt on a small plate. Set aside.
  2. Squeeze fresh limes to obtain about 1 oz (30 ml) of juice.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz (60 ml) blanco tequila, 1 oz (30 ml) fresh lime juice, and 1 oz (30 ml) orange liqueur.
  4. Fill the shaker halfway with ice cubes.
  5. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well chilled and mixed.
  6. Fill the prepared rocks glass with fresh ice.
  7. Strain the margarita mixture into the glass over the ice.
  8. Garnish with a lime wedge or a thin lime wheel.

Notes

Use fresh lime juice for best flavor; avoid bottled juice. Use 100% agave blanco tequila for a clean taste. Rim the glass once with lime wedge to avoid salt clumps. Shake well but avoid over-shaking to prevent dilution. Large ice cubes chill without watering down quickly. Serve immediately for best freshness. Optional: add a teaspoon of agave syrup if you prefer a sweeter margarita.
