Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • Red and blue gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes on medium speed.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed just until combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Shape dough into a disk, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  7. Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch (6mm) thickness. Cut out star shapes with cookie cutters and place 1 inch apart on baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges begin to turn golden but centers remain soft. Remove from oven.
  9. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. For frosting, beat butter and cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk, until spreadable consistency is reached.
  11. Divide frosting into three bowls; tint one red, one blue, and leave one white.
  12. Frost each cookie using an offset spatula or piping bag. Let frosting set at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Chill dough for at least 1 hour to prevent spreading and maintain star shape. Use room temperature eggs and butter for best texture. Watch baking time closely to keep cookies soft. Add milk slowly to frosting to achieve desired consistency. Practice piping for neat frosting edges.
