This hearty and flavorful Thanksgiving stuffing recipe combines savory herbs, crisp veggies, and buttery bread cubes baked to golden perfection. It’s a holiday staple that’s easy to prepare and customizable to suit your tastes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound crusty bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (day-old bread works best)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 34 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth (use low-sodium if preferred)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoon sage
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 pound cooked sausage
  • Optional: 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Spread the bread cubes onto a baking sheet and toast them for 15 minutes until slightly dry.
  2. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion, celery, and garlic. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the parsley, sage, and thyme, cooking for another minute to release their flavors.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, and optional add-ins (if using). In a separate bowl, whisk together the broth, eggs, salt, and pepper. Pour the mixture over the bread and gently toss until evenly coated.
  5. Transfer the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the covered stuffing for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy.
  7. Let the stuffing cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley for an extra pop of color.

Notes

[‘Use day-old bread to avoid mushy stuffing.’, ‘Taste the mixture before baking and adjust seasoning as needed.’, ‘Bake uncovered for the last 20 minutes for a crispy top.’, ‘Prep the stuffing the night before and refrigerate for convenience.’]
