A quick and easy comfort food recipe featuring crispy fries topped with spicy chili, melted cheese, and creamy sour cream. Perfect for casual gatherings or a satisfying weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) frozen French fries (preferably straight-cut)
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups chili (homemade or canned, lean version recommended)
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheese (mix of sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack)
  • ½ cup (120ml) sour cream (full-fat or light)
  • 2 stalks green onions, thinly sliced
  • Jalapeño slices (optional, fresh or pickled)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) or air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread frozen fries evenly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a single layer. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, or air fry for about 15 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally.
  3. While fries cook, warm the chili in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally and add cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper if using homemade chili. Simmer gently for 5-7 minutes until heated through.
  4. Once fries are golden and crispy, remove from oven or air fryer and transfer to an oven-safe serving dish or leave on the baking sheet if oven-proof.
  5. Evenly spoon the warm chili over the fries, spreading to cover most of the surface without drowning them.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the chili-topped fries. Place back in the oven or under a broiler for 3-5 minutes until cheese melts bubbly and slightly golden. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for a minute before topping with dollops of sour cream. Optionally, mix sour cream with a pinch of garlic powder or lime juice for extra zing.
  8. Garnish with sliced green onions and jalapeño slices for freshness and heat. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overcrowd fries to keep them crispy. Warm chili gently to avoid drying out. Watch cheese closely under broiler to prevent burning. For extra crispiness, reheat fries briefly after adding chili before melting cheese. Customize spice levels by adjusting cumin, paprika, jalapeños, or hot sauce. Dairy-free options include vegan cheese and sour cream substitutes.
